Inspired in the Year of the Monkey by the greatest of all monkeys—the monkey king “Sun WuKong”—the glass artwork here depicts a hero from legend. One of the most widely celebrated works in Chinese literature, “Journey to the West” follows the story of this hero across thousands of miles. Sun, a sort of “demi-god,” could transform himself into any of 72 manifestations with just a pinch of the fur. Here, he sits atop a bunch of bananas, the one-to-one proportions representing his ability to obtain whatever he so chooses. Being true to the story, LIULI’s Chinese glass art sculpts a monkey king that is as strong as he is witty, clever and mischievous. It represents a strength and intelligence that everyone can aspire to.
